    In 1963, the world’s main reservoirs of smallpox were found in Asia. 75,000 cases and 23,000 deaths were reported there. Most of these cases were in India. The smallpox endemic areas in Asia were a threat not only to the countries in which they were found but to the whole world, as shown by the outbreaks which followed in Europe. The biggest campaign against smallpox in 1963 was the Indian national eradication programme which aimed at vaccinating the entire population or more than 400 million people within two years. The programme started at the end of 1962, and by March 1964 224,500,000 vaccinations were performed, using freeze-dried vaccine recommended by WHO for use in the tropics. In New Delhi, a special propaganda campaign was launched.     During the 17th session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia, which met in New Delhi, 22-28 September 1964, the Technical Discussions were devoted to smallpox eradication. Dr. K. M. Lal, Deputy Director General of Health Services of India was elected chairman of the discussions. It was pointed out that Asia still had the largest number of smallpox cases and deaths. In 1963, this continent had reported 81% (75,000) of the world’s total cases. It was stressed that eradication of smallpox from the region could only be achieved if nationwide eradication projects were pursued by all countries and if an adequate level of immunization was maintained on a long-term basis after the implementation of mass eradication programmes. It was noted that most countries in South-East Asia had started production of freeze-dried smallpox vaccine with the assistance of WHO and UNICEF. However, it would take two years before they could meet their own requirements. Donations of vaccine to a WHO Voluntary Fund for Health Promotion helped to meet needs.     WHO-aided anti-leprosy pilot project in Thailand Leprosy was a serious problem in Thailand where, according to certain estimates, around 1% of the population (i.e. some 200,000 people) suffered from this disease. In October 1955, at the request of the Thai Government, WHO sent a leprologist, Dr Ramon Miquel, to set up a pilot project at Khon Kaen in the North of Thailand, for the demonstration of modern methods of leprosy control - with emphasis on case-finding, domiciliary treatment, surveillance of contacts and training of personnel.     Eyes that need weep no more. In 1959 it was estimated that nearly 400 million people suffered from trachoma. Though this eye infection does not kill, it can last a lifetime if untreated. Its victims often become blind. In India, trachoma was the largest single cause of preventable blindness. In some rural areas of Northern India the infection rate was as high as 80-90 per cent of the total population. A WHO-assisted pilot project trachoma team based at the Gandhi Eye Hospital in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, visited the region village by village, examining patients and organizing antibiotic treatment, and carrying out research to determinate the ways in which infection spread. The methods of attack proved effective in preventing blindness but complete control of trachoma and associated bacterial conjunctivitis requires the support of long-term health education and environmental sanitation programmes.Eyes that need weep no more. Yaws (also known as frambesia tropica, thymosis, polypapilloma tropicum, parangi, bouba, frambösie and pian) is a tropical infection of the skin, bones and joints caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum pertenue. The disease begins with a round, hard swelling of the skin, 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The center may break open and form an ulcer. This initial skin lesion typically heals after three to six months. After weeks to years, joints and bones may become painful, fatigue may develop, and new skin lesions may appear.The skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet may become thick and break open. The bones (especially those of the nose) may become misshapen. After five years or more large areas of skin death with subsequent scarring may occur. Yaws is spread by direct contact with the fluid from a lesion of an infected person. The contact is usually of a non-sexual nature. The disease is most common among children, who spread it by playing together. Other related treponemal diseases are bejel (Treponema pallidum endemicum), pinta (Treponema pallidum carateum), and syphilis (Treponema pallidum pallidum). Yaws is often diagnosed by the appearance of the lesions. Blood antibody tests may be useful but cannot separate previous from current infections. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the most accurate method of diagnosis. Prevention is, in part, by curing those who have the disease thereby decreasing the risk of transmission. Where the disease is common, treating the entire community is effective. Improving cleanliness and sanitation will also decrease spread. Treatment is typically with antibiotics including: azithromycin by mouth or benzathine penicillin by injection. Without treatment, physical deformities occur in 10% of cases. In the 1950s and 1960s the World Health Organization nearly eradicated yaws.
